Do I need an Athletic Therapist or a Physiotherapist?
Both Athletic Therapists and Physiotherapist specialize in treating the musculoskeletal system, which is the body’s muscles, ligaments and tendons, all of these body parts are essential for movement.
Both have the ability to: – diagnose injuries; – develop and deliver a personalized treatment plan to improve movement and reduce pain;- improve the fitness of their patients;- specialize in pain reduction; – Assess their patients and give advice on ergonomic set up,
Athletic Therapists specialize in the immediate care, prevention, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries (muscles, ligaments and tendons). Through a 4 year bachelor degree Athletic Therapists are trained in the immediate care of an individual as well as in-depth assessment of both chronic and acute injuries for optimal rehabilitation.
Physiotherapists specialize in treating the musculoskeletal system, but have a higher medical background. This allows them to treat patients with complex conditions such as neurological (e.g.concussions, vertigo), respiratory (e.g. airflow obstruction) or cardiac (e.g. heart attack and stroke) rehabilitation. Some of these complex conditions need hands on therapy and would benefit best by seeing a in-clinic.
Both physiotherapists and athletic therapists use therapeutic modalities, modern rehabilitative techniques, physical reconditioning, and supportive processes, to create an environment that promotes healing. Each of these professionals maintain a high standard of professional conduct, focus on proper assessment, management and rehabilitation of acute as well as chronic injury along with injury prevention.
Doctors referrals are not required to receive assessment by an Athletic Therapist or Physiotherapist.
